Last summer, Jejune stepped on the crack she suspects caused her mother’s death. Now, she upholds superstitious routine to protect Dad at all costs.
As Dad shares the news he’s leaving for a work trip over winter break, a black cat delivers an eerie invitation to a place called Bad Manor, addressed to C.O.R.P.S.E.—Children Of Routine Prison Seeking Escape. Jejune questions whether the cat is bringing more dreaded bad luck into her life or if the envelope’s etched white rabbit is the good luck she’s been summoning. The safest answer is usually a no-brainer but not when her best friend’s thinning patience is severing their bond.
Jejune takes the one thing she avoids most, a risk, and joins other habit-wielding candidates. The Manor has its quirks, such as a hand that hands out compliments and a staircase with eyes that stare at its guests. But one room spikes Jejune’s anxiety, and she can’t control her new friends. Routine is no match for the bad luck spilling from the Manor’s walls and escape is impossible despite the invitation’s acronym. Jejune must figure out why she was invited, or she may never make it out to oversee Dad’s fate.
